copy and advice for web, Internet, subscriptions and memberships

“I just made an easy $9,500 in three days from one simple technique I learned while reading The Versatile Freelancer. I had never critiqued speeches, but Chapter 2, all about doing critiques for money, gave me the idea and taught me everything I needed to know....”

Michael Cloud, Speechwriter

Dear colleague,

One of America’s great and famous copywriters, Don Hauptman, has written a book on how freelance copywriters and other creative professionals can make money by critiquing, consulting, training and presenting to business people; to audiences large and small.

I was interested in Don’s book because it sounds a lot like what I do for a living. Although I publish websites, books and newsletters on copywriting and subscriptions marketing, a major part of my work is running copywriting and subscriptions marketing workshops for publishers and membership marketers.

Reading the book, The Versatile Freelancer, two major and unusual benefits for copywriters, marketers and other professionals leapt off the pages:

  • Don gives clear direction in an area I believe most freelance copywriters and marketing consultants often get wrong – how much to charge for their services. I have published an extract on this topic below.

  • As far as I am aware, Don Hauptman’s book is the only one of its kind around, because it’s written for the copywriter or creative professional who wants to expand his or her business into other areas. If you have come across another, let me know!

Below is Don Hauptman’s letter to me with that extract on how to charge clients. It explains far more succinctly than I could what The Versatile Freelancer offers.

Best wishes

Marketing Best Practice

Dear Peter,

Hope all is well. We were in touch last year about my e-book, The Versatile Freelancer.

I wanted to update you on the book, the full title of which is The Versatile Freelancer: How Writers and Other Creative Professionals Can Generate More Income by Seizing New Opportunities in Critiquing, Consulting, Training, and Presenting.

First, because it’s been a year since the book was published, here’s a brief recap of developments:

1. When I wrote the book, as the title and subtitle indicate, I initially targeted copywriters and other creative pros such as myself. But I was surprised to discover that the content has proven to be valuable to a wider audience. We’ve been deploying a powerful benefit concept and headline: “Share What You Knowundefinedand Get Paid for It!”

Readers and marketers alike have universally acclaimed The Versatile Freelancer and have sent us enthusiastic testimonials. My favorite is from an old friend, a speechwriter named Michael Cloud. It begins:

“I just made an easy $9,500 in three days from one simple technique I learned while reading The Versatile Freelancer. I had never critiqued speeches, but Chapter 2, all about doing critiques for money, gave me the idea and taught me everything I needed to know....”

The book has been selling well via Early to Rise (for which I write a popular weekly column) and other online marketers. When AWAI made a special offer to its house list, 108 copies sold almost instantly.

Last but not least, The Versatile Freelancer is perfectly positioned to sell in the current economic climate. Many people I interviewed for the book and for promotional material told me that they’re surviving and prospering because they’re professionally diversifiedundefinedin other words, applying precisely the strategies the book recommends.

In these difficult recessionary times, that’s a compelling sales point.

As Don Hauptman puts it:

“Think about all the valuable knowledge and experience you possess.

Take it from me. Few people have that level of expertise or specialized skills. There’s a market and a demand for it.

All of this spells opportunityundefinedfor you. You can share what you know … and get paid for it!

How much? How about $2,000, $4,000, $7,500, $10,000? And not just once but repeatedly and consistently. I did it, and I’ll show you how to do it, too!

The opportunities are everywhere, and the potential benefits are huge. What’s more, the rewards go way beyond money, and include numerous other advantages I’ll tell you about below.”

Extracted from The Versatile Freelancer:

Publications and websites list rates for all sorts of professions and services, but as a

copywriter, I always found such estimates laughably lower than what I was able to command.

For in-house training, you should always be paid. Unlike industry gatherings, company seminars offer you no public relations value. They are jobs that warrant compensation. To recap my own fees from the first chapter:

  • Promotional critique: $2,000 to $4,000
  • Consultation: $4,000 to $7,500
  • In-house seminar: $5,000 to $10,000

I asked the people I interviewed for this book to quote the fees they charge. I learned that critiques can run from $500 to $8,000; a day of consulting, $550 to $2,500; an in-house training seminar, $2,500 to $10,000.

Those who charge for speaking engagements receive anywhere from $2,000 to $10,000 for a presentation, plus travel expenses. Several conceded that their fees are flexible if the event sponsor buys a negotiated quantity of their books or offers the opportunity for “back of the room” sales for their products.

Coaches usually charge several hundred dollars an hour. One friend of mine is so good at what he does that he commands $1,000 an hour to tutor entrepreneurs in copywriting and marketing.

You may not yet be able to command the prices cited above. You may need to start out in the three figures and work your way up to four or five. But don’t shortchange yourself. You may be pleasantly surprised to discover what companies are willing to pay, especially if your ideas and advice make or save them many times that figure.
